Key Specifications & Features

The Star  SAFIRE 230‑HD is a high-definition, gyro-stabilized multi-sensor imaging system in FLIR’s airborne lineup.

General Overview

  • The most compact HD system in the Star  SAFIRE family, packaged in a 9‑inch turret

Imaging Sensors

  • Thermal (IR): Uses a 640 × 512 InSb MWIR focal plane array, delivering “real HD” quality
  • Color HD: Color CCD‑TV, progressive scan, 1280 × 720 resolution, with a 10× continuous zoom, e-zom 20x overall (FOV ~29° to 0.25°)
  • Low-Light HD: Image-intensified,  811 × 580 resolution and 120× zoom, offering enhanced performance under low-light conditions

Stabilization & Tracking

  • Exceptionally stable clear imagery during rapid aircraft maneuvers
  • Includes gyro-stabilization plus options for IMU/GPS, laser illuminator/pointer, and multi-target tracking capabilities

Connectivity & Interfaces

  • Fully digital architecture, maintaining HD quality end-to-end
  • Interface-compatible with the Star  SAFIRE family using commercial standards: connectors like MIL-D-38999, and interfaces such as SMPTE‑292M, IEEE 1394B, Ethernet, RS‑232/422/485, ARINC 419/429, and MIL-STD‑1553B

Environmental & Operational Specs

  • Built to withstand harsh environments: meets MIL‑STD‑810E (environmental ruggedness) and MIL‑STD‑461F (EMI/EMC) standards
  • Operational temperature range spans –40 °C to +55 °C
  • Runs on standard aircraft power: 22–29 VDC (MIL‑STD‑704E)

Summary

The Star SAFIRE 230‑HD combines high-resolution thermal, daylight, and low-light imaging into a compact, ruggedized, and highly stabilized turret designed for airborne surveillance, ISR, SAR, and other mission-critical tasks. Its digital architecture, common interface, and modularity made it a streamlined solution for platforms requiring multisensor HD capability in a small form factor.
